“Then the LORD asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth–a man of complete integrity. He fears God and will have nothing to do with evil.'” Job 1:8
It astounds me the immense pride that the Lord finds in Job.
In the verses prior to this Job’s impeccable character and faith are built up, describing his integrity, purity, commitment, humility and God given blessing. Then one simple verse later God meets Satan, asks him where he came front, and then flat out brings his servant Job into the conversation. But it isn’t even that he is simply pointing out Job’s existence on the Earth; God is joyfully proclaiming Job’s astonishing amount of faith and wisdom.
Everytime I have read the story of Job I have focused on his trials and Job’s faith through his trials, but never once did I solely look at this verse…the verse that started it all. In the midst of a story where many readers focus on the hardships, I have found a new locus of my attention; pride and joy.

I find God’s pride and joy in Job so inspiring and encouraging; but it also makes me question my own life. Have I lived my life in such a way that I make God proud of me and joyfilled because of my great faith? Has my life been marked with integrity, humility, commitment and purity, and so much so that God would call me out for it?
We can never live our lives in a perfect way, and most of us will fall short of even the man Job, but we can strive to be called out by God, to live our lives in God given wisdom, faith and character. Needless to say, we will always be loved by God, no matter what wrongs we commit and no matter how many times we fall short of “perfection”. But we can aim to please our creator. We can aim to make him proud and fill him with joy in his good and faithful servant.
