I believe that love is one of the most understated and misunderstood concepts in this world. The stereotype of love is that it is some far off fanciful, fluffy, frou frou, frilly experience that can only be achieved through a feeling of immense exhilaration and bliss.
We read scripture that tells us, “God is love”, and therefore we compare our version of love… the frilly, frou frou, blissfully exciting feeling…with the love that the God of the universe shows and is. Because of this comparison, we limit God’s love to our worldly definition. Therefore, when we don’t feel loved based on our expectations, we ultimately then doubt God’s love for us. It is when we doubt God’s love that we begin to doubt whether or not he cares about us and our circumstances, we doubt if we are lovable or capable of experiencing love, we doubt God’s power in this universe and we many even doubt God’s existence at all.
This misguided and extremely passive definition of love leaves us powerless still feeling unaccepted, unfulfilled and incapable.
What we must do is redefine our definition of love. Love is not always frou frou, frilly and full of feeling. But love is powerful. God’s love is more than feelings and bliss, so incredibly much more. I believe God’s love is based on acceptance and favor.
“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”(1 Corinthians 13:7)
One of the most difficult characteristics of love to comprehend is unconditional acceptance. The world constantly proves to us that if we make a mistake, or if we don’t live up to the expectation that everyone sets for us; that somehow we are less lovable and less worthy of being loved. God offers a love that never loses faith in us, never gives up on us and endures through every mistake we make and every failure we experience. We must trust in the fact that we are fully accepted, sin and all, just as we are. God’s love is not depend on how good we are, how many people we please or what we accomplish in this life. He loves us simply because we are his.
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

It is unfortunate that when talking about the love of God we always leave out the huge matter of the favor of God. As followers of Christ, we have the supernatural blessing from God. We have the authority in Christ that is more powerful than any source in the world. Through Christ we walk through this world fearlessly, with confidence in his provision and blessing in our lives. We must claim the authority and favor that Jesus Christ gives us; letting his unconditional love propel us forward into the future without fear. We must believe with all of ourselves in the unexplainably incredible plans that he has ready for each of us to accomplish.
I believe that we must take hold of this new definition of love. It is when we finally believe that God fully accepts us that we can walk with power, conviction and authority in the path that he has laid before us. God has called us to be love, to walk in love and to live with love. But we can’t do that to our greatest ability until we start defining love with truth.
Toss out the frou frou love…
Live in love, but redefine it first.
