It’s not my job to point out your flaws.  At one point I thought it was.  I thought it was my job to be someone else’s conscience, to be their moral compass and their “guiding light”.

From this we learn to walk on the narrow path; meaning living morally right lives, having controlled thoughts and actions and trying to maintain a pure lifestyle.  But just as I did, I think many of us take this verse a little too far.  (let me go on…)

Instead of us living on our narrow path and being an example to others by our walk, we often take this verse as a command to view the world in a narrow frame of mind.  This can be a good thing and a bad thing.  It’s good when we  filter what comes in from the world in order to keep ourselves from temptation or just bad stuff!  It’s bad when we use this command as a “go ahead” to start condemning others for their not so narrow way of life or even simply pointing out other people’s flaws.

Let me challenge you with this…

We should walk on the narrow path, but not think narrow mindedly.

I read from the book Unchristian that “we [Christians] have become famous for what we oppose, rather than who we are for.”  This is tragic to me; that we are so much more well known for essentially being negative than positive! This principle of walking the narrow path isn’t a call to point out the negative in everyone else. It is a call to live righteously, and if anything, it is calling us to be bold in our love, not our judgments. I find it quite disgusting actually that the most “hard core” Christians are often the most narrow minded as well.  They are often then ones that will call out your sin and point out the mistake you made…that one time.  I find that to be the exact opposite of what we are called to do as Christians. We have the most positive message that the world has ever seen….Freedom from Sin!  So why do we keep holding other people’s sins over their heads?

My intent is not to encourage you to live like the world.  My desire is for you to live according to Christ and his teachings, and to see His World and His Children through an open mind to accept them as God’s creation…sin and all.  After all, why point out a speck in someone else’s eye when you have a log in your own?

Walk the narrow path, but don’t think narrow mindedly.
