A guest post by the wonderful Jessica Sauer! Trust me, you need to read what she’s got to say!

As I’ve been pondering what to write about specifically regarding the Lord’s goodness, I’ve come up with few ideas for what to say. My list – as of lately – is quite short. As I thought about what I wanted to communicate to others about the Lord’s goodness in my life, I found myself floundering, at a loss for what to say.

And not in a good way.

You see, if I’m being transparent with you, I have not been feeling the Lord’s goodness.

There are both a variety and a plethora of reasons why I have not been feeling the Lords’ goodness lately, but you don’t need me to list them out for you, because perhaps you too are in the same place. If you aren’t there now, it probably means that you either just came out of or are about to go into a place of feeling a lack of the Lord’s goodness.

As I was wondering what to write about regarding God’s goodness, I realized that it doesn’t matter how I feel about God’s goodness as much as it matters about His faithfulness in His goodness.

Most of the time, there is a wide difference between the feelings and the facts of our lives. Let me put it this way: God may not feel good right now, but the fact, the absolute truth, is that God is good. God is a faithful, consistent, never-changing God.

2 Timothy 2:13a — NIV
If we are faithless, He remains faithful…

He has been loving in the past, and He continues to love. (1 John 4:8, Romans 8:38-39)
He has been gracious in the past, and He continues to pour grace upon grace out on His children. (Ephesians 3:7)
He has been full of peace in the past, and He continues to give peace each and every day. (Philippians 4:7)
And He has been good in the past, and He will continue to be good without fail. (Psalm 145:9, Psalm 106:1)

Because of this – because of His consistency – He can be trusted. Because of His faithfulness, He is safe to trust. Because of His never-changing character, He is trustworthy. God is trustworthy, for He is faithful. And God is good.

Despite the circumstances that I am in, regardless of the feelings that I am facing, I know these two things to be true:
(1) God is faithful – He does not change.
(2) God is good – this does not change.

Feelings – the majority of the time – are different than truth. I may not feel like God is present, but He is – He’s there as an omnipresent, caring Father. I may not feel like God has my best interests in mind, but He does – He’s a loving, omniscient Redeemer. I may not feel like God is in control, but He is – He’s an all-knowing, omnipotent King. I may not feel like God is good, but He is – He’s good and He will continue to be good regardless of what we think of Him, His goodness, and the circumstances that we find ourselves in.

For me, my environment – the happenings around me, the circumstances surrounding me – largely affect my view of God. When instead, I need to strive to have my environment be largely affected by my view of God.

So wherever you find yourself today, please realize that God’s goodness is fact. God’s goodness is not a flakey, ever-changing feeling that is easily affected by the environment; no, God’s goodness is the truth that we can tightly cling to.

Whatever circumstances we face, whatever challenges are thrown our way, even when we don’t have much of anything to say regarding our feelings towards God’s goodness, we can know this to be fact, we can cling to this truth: God is good. His goodness is real, it is never-failing because He is faithful.

Praise the Lord that His goodness is not contingent on my feelings towards His goodness. No, His goodness is consistent, faithfully rooted in the character of Christ. Hallelujah!

Psalm 100:5 — NIV
For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.
