Welcome back to the blog Ashley Radke! She has guest blogged for us once before, and we are so excited to have her back to share more of her relationship with the Lord.  Today’s topic of hearing God speak will encourage anyone who longs to hear God’s voice and experience a greater depth of relationship with Him. Make sure you leave feedback to let us know how this impacted you!

When I think about what it means to hear God’s voice, I think about quieting my mind and opening my heart to receive His love. In a quiet moment I whisper, “Father, what would you like to say to me?” I hear Him say, “You are doing a good job.” In a moment such as this, I feel more love than in any other moment in life. It is when God speaks, and He says something that may sound so simple to anyone else, yet it means the whole world to me. That is our loving Father. That is the God who wants to speak to us, and He knows exactly what to say.

I used to not know I could hear God’s voice. I never had confidence or trust that He could speak to someone like me. I thought I wasn’t a good enough Christian or one that could never have a close relationship with God. Encounters with hearing God’s voice were only for the ‘famous’ or ‘anointed’ people who could do more for the kingdom in one day than I could do in five years.

Yet over the course of time, the Lord showed me a truth I desperately needed. This truth is best summed up in a quote by Heidi Baker: “God is not looking for extraordinary, exceptionally gifted people. Just laid down lovers of Jesus who will carry His glory with transparency and not take it for themselves.”  This is the starting place of hearing God. It is by loving God and allowing ourselves to be loved by Him. He will speak if we listen, and all we have to do is seek Him in relationship.

Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

When Jesus walked the earth and spoke parables, He often stated, “he who has an ear, let him hear.” I wonder if this meant that anyone could hear God’s voice through the parables Jesus spoke just by listening. It sounds like a choice. Jesus himself gave the people permission to be able to “hear.” In my interpretation of Jesus’ statement, I believe God had already given us the ability to hear His voice, and it is just a matter of whether we want to acknowledge the voice as God speaking, choosing to believe in what He says as truth, and obeying what He asks of us.  1 Corinthians 2:16 tells us that “we have the mind of Christ.” As believers, we should be even more confident that we hear God’s voice because He has renewed our minds and given us an ability to think like Christ.

Throughout my own journey of hearing God’s voice, I had to learn to trust God. I had to learn that God wanted to speak to me and He wanted to use me to speak to others. I had to learn that God’s grace is enough. So, when I don’t feel good enough to speak an encouraging word to someone, I have to remember that God is still good. He will still use me to speak to someone because He wants to love that person and get Jesus across to them. God meets us in moments of weakness to cover us with grace so we can show others the love of Christ. If this love of Christ can shine through an imperfect person like me, then I am positive He can do it through anyone. All it takes is a listening ear that will choose to hear and a willing heart that will receive and believe.
